Question Of The Week: How This Image Sums Up Your Reading Tastes

So, the question of the week from the Stuck in a Book blog is to explain how your chosen image sums up your reading taste, or a part of it.

Question of the Week (Image by Erik Johansson "Fishy Island")
Question of the Week (Image by Erik Johansson “Fishy Island”)

The image presents Erik Johansson Fishy Island. A surreal image. A mesmerizing sight of a fish floating in a concrete tank that overlooks an island peppered with houses. To me, this picture perfectly encapsulates my love for the surreal and the dreamlike. It’s like looking at a scene straight out of a dream or a far-flung imagination – a space where the ordinary is entwined with the extraordinary.

Such surreal and imaginative narratives resonate deeply with my reading tastes. For instance, Haruki Murakami’s “Kafka on the Shore” effortlessly blends the tangible with the ethereal, taking readers on a journey where boundaries blur. Similarly, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” offers a rich tapestry of magical realism, making everyday life seem enchanted and vice versa. The allure of these stories for me lies in their ability to distort reality and challenge our perceptions, much like the image.

Furthermore, the artistic flair of the image touches upon my fascination with surreal art and photography. It reminds me of the captivating works of Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. Their art, much like my favorite reads, beckons viewers to delve deeper, question reality, and revel in the interplay of the familiar and the unfamiliar. In essence, the image serves as a visual metaphor for my eclectic reading preferences, which gravitate towards stories and art that defy conventions and stretch the boundaries of imagination.

“The Motion of the Ocean” by Janna Cawrse Esarey: Book Review

Introduction

“The Motion of the Ocean: 1 Small Boat, 2 Average Lovers, and a Woman’s Search for the Meaning of Wife” by Janna Cawrse Esarey is a delightful memoir that takes the reader on a two-year sailing adventure across the Pacific Ocean. The newlyweds Janna and her husband Graeme set sail from Seattle and make their way Japan. Along the way they experience the highs and lows of life at sea. This book is about the actual journey and Janna’s personal quest to understand what it means to be a wife.

The Journey Begins

It starts with the couple deciding to leave their comfortable lives behind and embark on this ambitious journey despite having little sailing experience. They navigate through breathtaking sunsets and terrifying storms. The author Janna candidly shares her fears, frustrations, and moments of joy. Her writing is honest and often humorous, making the story relatable and engaging. It was really enjoyable to follow along.

The Complexities of Marriage

The main theme of the book is the complexity of marriage. Their relationships is tested because they are living in the confined space of their small boat. Janna regularly reflects on their everyday challenges. Things like cooking in a tiny galley or dealing with seasickness. This adds a lot of authenticity to her story. She openly discusses the emotional turmoil and the compromises required to maintain a relationship in such unique conditions. You are able to relate to her on may different levels.

Adventure and Personnel Discovery

The adventure itself is quite gripping and exciting. But I felt like it was Janna’s internal journey that really stood out. She thinks about what society expects, what she wants for herself, and what she might have to give up for love.. Her struggle with identity—balancing her own dreams with her role in the marriage—is a central theme that many readers will personally understand.

Vivid Descriptions

The book isn’t just about their story, it takes you right there with them on their adventure! The writer describes their journey in so much detail, you can almost taste the salty ocean spray and hear the wood of the boat creaking as it sails. From tiny, faraway islands to endless stretches of blue ocean, the whole trip is like a beautiful painting behind their story.

“The Motion of the Ocean” Relatable and Engaging

What makes “The Motion of the Ocean” so interesting is that you can easily connect with it, even if you’ve never set foot on a sailboat. The story is all about love, figuring things out together, and learning and growing along the way. Things everyone can understand. Janna writes in a way that’s easy to follow and even funny sometimes, so it feels like you’re right there with her. She tells you the good stuff and the not-so-good stuff, like being stuck alone sometimes and not having everything you want. It’s honest and refreshing.

Conclusion

In conclusion, “The Motion of the Ocean” is a compelling read for anyone interested in travel, relationships, and self-discovery. Janna Cawrse Esarey’s story is a testament to the power of adventure in shaping our lives and relationships. It’s a reminder that sometimes, stepping out of our comfort zone is the best way to find out who we really are. This book is a beautiful mix of adventure tale and love story, filled with insightful observations and life lessons. If you’re looking for an inspiring and entertaining read, this one is a great pick. Happy reading!

In Which I Attempt to Review Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

Not Your Typical Love Story

Sarah Waters’ “Fingersmith” dives right into the dark side of Victorian England headfirst! It’s a story full of surprises, with twists and turns that will keep you guessing. So we start off by meeting Sue, a young woman who’s good at picking pockets. She basically a small time gangster of the time period. Life on the streets has been tough, but she’s smart and can handle herself. Then we meet this guy. A shady character named Gentleman that tricks Sue into helping him steal money from a rich woman named Maud. (I got a creepy feeling from him). And now the game is afoot…

OK, so what’s the plan? Here we go….

The plan is to get close to Maud, have her locked away in a mental hospital, and take all her stuff! But things get messy when Sue actually starts to care about Maud. Now Sue has to decide who to trust and what’s the right thing to do. The funny thing is that most often we know what the right thing to do is. Choosing to do it is another story.

Who Can You Believe?

“Fingersmith” is more than just a caper. It’s a story about secrets and lies. Everyone seems to be hiding something, and it’s hard to know who’s telling the truth. Sue wrestles with her past as a thief and her newfound feelings for Maud. Maud, lonely and confused, isn’t sure who to trust either. The suspense builds as you wonder what will happen next.

Characters You Can Root For (or Against!)

The people in “Fingersmith” aren’t all good or all bad. Sue might steal things, but she’s also kind of brave. Maud seems helpless, but she’s stronger than you think. Waters makes you care about the characters, even when they make bad choices.

A Trip Through Victorian London’s Seedy Side

Get ready for a trip to a different time! Waters paints a picture of Victorian England that’s not all fancy balls and proper ladies. We see the dirty streets and dark alleys where poor people struggle to survive. This gritty setting makes the story feel even more real.

A Gripping Page-Turner

“Fingersmith” is a book you won’t want to put down. The plot races along, with surprising turns that will keep you guessing. By the end, you’ll be thinking about the characters and the story long after you finish reading.
